Adam Carolla, the well-known comedian and radio host, recently opened up about his time on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, painting a picture of an environment that was anything but relaxed. He shared these reflections during an interview on After Party with Emily Jashinsky, recalling how the staff seemed extremely on edge around the famous host. Carolla remembered a segment producer approaching him before his appearance, making sure he wouldn’t bring up meat or eating habits, given DeGeneres’s vegan lifestyle at the time.

“He came up and said, ‘Hey, so you’re not going to mention meat, right?’” Carolla recounted, hinting at the nervousness of the producer. This wasn’t just a one-off warning either; the producer circled back about 20 minutes later, reiterating the need to avoid any mention of meat. “He came back right before I went out, and he’s like, ‘OK, but don’t talk about beef or meat or any[thing],’” Carolla continued, highlighting the tense nature of the show’s backstage atmosphere.

Comparing this experience to his times on other late-night shows, Carolla noted a stark difference. Unlike Ellen’s show, his appearances on Jimmy Kimmel and Jay Leno’s shows were characterized by laid-back and friendly vibes. He attributed these positive experiences to the more relaxed demeanors of Kimmel and Leno, contrasting them with the tense environment he felt at The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Carolla elaborated further, adding that the atmosphere at Late Show with David Letterman was similarly tense. But it was DeGeneres’s show that stood out for its fear-inducing environment. “Ellen’s show, people were scared — real scared,” he said, emphasizing the unique stress he noticed among the staff.

In a conversation with a writer who had worked for both DeGeneres and Rosie O’Donnell, Carolla got some eye-opening insights. The writer, who had signed a non-disclosure agreement, told Carolla that working for Ellen was far more difficult. “I just went, ‘How’s Ellen?’ And he said, ‘Worst person, uh, worst person — not worst person I’ve worked for, worst person I’ve ever met,’” Carolla recounted.

He further conveyed how the writer described Ellen as anything but nice. “She’s not a nice person at all,” the writer had added. Carolla pointed out that the fear among the staff spoke volumes about Ellen’s demeanor, even if she wasn’t directly mean to him as a guest.

In the wake of these revelations, it’s worth noting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show faced significant backlash in 2020 over allegations of a toxic work environment. Former employees accused the show’s leadership of creating a culture steeped in fear and intimidation. DeGeneres herself addressed these accusations during the final season of her show, apologizing for any harm caused.

More recently, DeGeneres tackled the controversy in her 2023 Netflix stand-up special, For Your Approval, marking her return to the spotlight post-show. She acknowledged the lasting impact of being labeled “mean,” admitting it affected her deeply. “I’ve spent an entire lifetime trying to make people happy and I’ve cared far too much what other people think of me,” she shared during the special.

Continuing, DeGeneres expressed how the perception of her as mean was devastating and consumed her for a long time. “After a lifetime of caring, I just can’t anymore. So I don’t,” she added, signaling a shift in her outlook. Now, DeGeneres resides in England with her wife, Portia de Rossi.

Carolla’s recollections and the past controversies surrounding Ellen paint a complex picture of the challenges behind the scenes of her once-beloved show. While DeGeneres has acknowledged and apologized for the feelings of her staff, the stories shared by Carolla contribute to a broader understanding of the show’s atmosphere. The narrative serves as a stark reminder of the pressures that can exist in high-profile environments, even when the cameras aren’t rolling.
